Marginalia

Terms of Service

Last updated June 2026. Plain English, because you should be able to read the terms of a tool that reads your mail.

What Marginalia is

Marginalia is a submission tracker for literary agents. It reads the submission correspondence in your own mailbox and keeps a ledger of which manuscripts are with which editors, what replies came back, and what is still outstanding. It is a record-keeping tool. It does not submit anything on your behalf, it does not contact editors for you, and it does not make decisions about your list.

Your data stays yours

You own your mail, your ledger, your editor directory and your notes. Using Marginalia gives us no claim over any of it. We claim only the narrow permission needed to run the service for you: to store your data, process it as described in the Privacy Policy, and show it back to you and to colleagues in your own agency workspace.

We do not use your correspondence or your ledger to train AI models, we do not sell it, and we do not share it between agencies. Each agency workspace is isolated from every other.

Your account

  • You need a Google account to sign in, and you must be entitled to use the mailbox you connect — your own, or your agency's with its permission.
  • Keep your Google account secure. Anyone who can sign into it can reach your ledger.
  • If your workspace has colleagues, they can see and change the agency's shared editor directory and submissions. Choose who you invite accordingly.
  • You can disconnect Gmail, reset imported data, or ask us to delete your workspace entirely at any time. The Privacy Policy sets out how each of those works.

Fair use

Please don't:

  • connect a mailbox you have no right to read
  • use Marginalia to harvest editors' contact details for bulk or unsolicited mail
  • attempt to reach another agency's workspace, or probe the service for ways to do so
  • resell access, or run automated traffic at a volume that degrades the service for others

We may suspend an account that does these things. Where we can, we will tell you why first.

What we don't promise

Marginalia is provided as-is, without warranty of any kind. Two limits are worth stating plainly, because they matter in daily use:

  • The ledger is assistive, not authoritative. Submissions are read out of email by an AI model, which sometimes misreads a message — a pass recorded as an offer, a title attached to the wrong editor, a reply missed because it didn't match your subject patterns. Check anything that matters before you act on it. It is a record of your correspondence, not a substitute for reading it.
  • We depend on services we don't control — Google, our AI provider, our hosts. If Gmail changes its rules or an outage takes the sync down, features may pause or stop.

To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential losses — including a missed submission, a lost sale, or a business decision made on an inaccurate ledger entry. Nothing here limits liability that cannot be limited by law.

Changes, ending, and contact

You can stop using Marginalia whenever you like; ask us and your workspace will be deleted. We may end or change the service, and if we do we will give reasonable notice to the address on your account so you can export or delete what you need.

If these terms change materially we will update the date above and note it in the app. Continuing to use Marginalia after that means you accept the revised terms.
